NYC Public Schools Reopen Tuesday as Every Street is Cleared Post-Winter Storm
NEW YORK (WABC) — As Mayor Zohran Mamdani works to get New York City back to normal after the winter storm, he announced that city schools will return to in-person learning on Tuesday.
As dedicated city workers mobilized across all five boroughs to clear streets and ensure the safety of New Yorkers, educators and students engaged in online learning. “Thanks to the round-the-clock work of our school facilities teams, we are ready to welcome students and staff back to classrooms tomorrow,” stated Mayor Mamdani.
Parts of New York City received nearly a foot of snow on Sunday, leading to the transition to virtual learning for Monday. The mayor emphasized, “Our goal is for all services to be fully restored by tomorrow, with all streets cleared and students back in school.”

Following his first snowstorm as mayor, Mamdani mentioned that over 5,000 sanitation workers, utilizing 2,500 pieces of equipment, worked tirelessly to treat and clear snow from city streets. “The strength of our response is a testament to all those who put in long shifts,” he remarked, affirming New York’s preparedness.
On Monday, the city school system reported 400,000 virtual log-ins among parents, students, and staff, while 500,000 students were scheduled for school as grades six through twelve observed a Professional Development Day.
Mamdani humorously recounted a remote classroom visit where he playfully offered students a snowball fight, stating, “They were very excited and asked for a time and place.”
Plans for Cleanup and Continued Services
In addition to resuming in-person classes, all after-school programs and adult education sessions, which were canceled Monday, will restart Tuesday. United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew praised Mamdani, granting him an “A” for his handling of the first snow day, and thanked students, educators, and families for their cooperation.
Cleanup efforts continue, with cleared streets ensuring access for emergency vehicles. However, some areas still show heavy snow piles. “Those huge mounds can’t stay at the corners; they need to be hauled away,” remarked Commissioner Javier Lojan of the Department of Sanitation.
While alternate side parking rules are suspended temporarily, citizens are encouraged to be patient as garbage collection is prioritized to enable snow removal.
Snow Melting Operations
Mamdani announced plans to activate snow melting operations, utilizing specialized machines capable of melting up to 120 tons of snow per hour. “We are committed to addressing the situation comprehensively,” he noted.
As NYC navigates the aftermath of the storm, engagement from the community is vital. New Yorkers are urged to manage sidewalks while still expecting additional passes from sanitation services.
