People who have managed to recover money lost gambling?

Home » People who have managed to recover money lost gambling?

Hi,

Are there any people here who have managed to rebuild their lives after losing everything to gambling?

How did you get through it, what methods did you use, and how long did it take?

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I have, I’m a recovering addict right now I own a house, have $80k in savings. 6 years ago I had zero money and about $30,000 in debt I’d gambled away. What worked for me was GA.

In getting serious what practically works for me is making it as hard to gamble as possible.

Make it hard to access – Wherever you gamble now ask them to ban you, even online sites. Just tell them you want to be banned. If you won’t do that you’re not serious about quitting.

Don’t make cash easy to get – keep savings in a seperate bank account, don’t have an app, don’t have a bank card linked to it. If you have to wait 24-48 hours for money to transfer you have time to cool off an urge. Only allow yourself to access small amounts of money at a time. As I said I have $80,000 in savings but only about $400 I could access today.

Apple/google pay on your smartphone. – not carrying a card, and using Apple Pay means I can go live my life without the risk of taking cash out.

Don’t use banking apps, I only log into my bank via a laptop, so if I’m out and about I can’t even try and move money if I felt like it.

Put as much friction between you and gambling as you can.

Yes it can be done. I was addicted to gambling for 12 years and am in recovery for almost 3.

It takes hard work and commitment.

1- understand that you are addicted to gambling and the only solution is to be gambling free for life

2- self exclude from all local and national jurisdictions as well as online and crypto casinos and betting sites

3- seek treatment in the form of medication for gambling use disorder and cognitive behavioral therapy

4- divest your finances to a trusted person and ask your bank and credit card issuer to block all gambling transactions

5- tell loved ones and family about your addiction and seek their help and support in beating it

6- ask to be referred to a mental health provider if you have a dual diagnosis that includes depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder etc…

Your life will be better in every way possible.

When you say recover , what do you mean? Recover in what way? Generally through life?
