Ryan Seacrest Discusses His Legacy in Exclusive Interview

Need to Know

  • Ryan Seacrest discussed the notion of legacy with PEOPLE at the Nashville American Idol Season 9 press line.
  • “In terms of what I hope people expect from me, or get when I’m on any show, is that they feel comfortable watching it,” Seacrest shared.
  • His “energy” comes from meeting new contestants each year who have grown up watching the show.

After nearly 25 years at the helm of American Idol, Ryan Seacrest reflects on his time with the iconic singing competition, yet he remains unconcerned about the concept of legacy.

“That’s a big question. I haven’t thought about legacy yet,” Seacrest told PEOPLE at the Nashville American Idol Season 9 press line in November 2025.

Seacrest added, “What I hope people expect when they watch any show of mine is that they feel comfortable. It should be enjoyable and easy to watch for anyone, regardless of age. I aim to make them feel as if we’ve known each other for a long time, even if we’ve never met.” This philosophy guides his hosting approach.

Although Seacrest has navigated the show through various seasons, judges, and contestants, his core perspective remains unwavering.

He explains, “You listen to the room and go with the flow of what the show is — you can’t plan out too much. The magic happens when you adapt to the moment.” This spontaneous nature has become a hallmark of American Idol‘s live shows.

With each new season, Seacrest’s enthusiasm is rejuvenated by the fresh faces auditioning—many of whom grew up idolizing the program.

Seacrest also pointed out a new trend among contestants: “Many say, ‘I never thought I would try out, but I saw someone like me on the show. It inspired me to take the leap.'” This evolution highlights the impact of representation in media.
